The plight of the modern teacher

My school has a no-cell-phones-during-class policy. If the phone is out during class time, we're supposed to take them away. The kid whom I took one from today was texting with his mom (or, more precisely, she was texting him). What on earth did she think she was doing? She knows the policy. Does she think the rules don't apply to her kid?

I don't get that! It's ridiculous! But kids and phones allude me anyway.

Well, after Columbine there was a big push for kids to be allowed to have cell phones at school. Plus, with all the after school activities and divorced parents, some of the kids really do need phones. Just not while in class.

I've worked in two different classrooms where I've found 1st graders to have cell phones. I don't really understand why a 6 year old needs one since they are never left alone.

my friend and i jsut had a discussion about this. a kid was asking for a bathroom break at the same time everyday and what we discovered was his mother was calling him everyday at the same time. Didn't she know he was in school? in class? wHAT IS THE POINT of such madness. I don't know what a mom could have to say to her child during the middle of the day everyday . . except, I love you.. . .but she could write a note and put it in lunch box and say the same thing. It's weird. . an elementary kids with a phone.. .
